Armed robbers strike
2008-09-04
A GROUP of men went on the rampage in Mbekweni on Saturday, committing two armed robberies. The first robbery took place on Saturday, when the three men entered a shop at the home of Steven Kampies, in Chris Hani. One of the men produced a firearm, while the rest grabbed cash from the till, as well as cellphone cards. They then fled the scene. Shortly after this the same group entered a cellphone shop in Thembani Square. Here the firearm was produced again, the owner threatened and the men fled with various cellphones. Mbuyisi Plaatyi (20) has been arrested in connection with the robberies and the police are following up strong leads. In a separate incident, a man selling meat from a lorry, was held up on Saturday afternoon in Pinzi Street. He was robbed of a large sum of cash, as well as his firearm. It is unclear whether this robbery can be linked to the other two. Anybody who can help the police with their investigation can contact Capt Selma Bredenhann at 021-868-9926.
