Students win science medals

SCHOLARS from the Drakenstein region were among the medal and prize winners at the Stellenbosch regional competition of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, which was held in Stellenbosch recently. The Expo was organised by the Institute for Mathematic and Scientific Teaching (IMSTUS) in the Faculty of Education at Stellenbosch University (SU), in conjunction with the SU Faculty of Science. The Expo for Young Scientists is a science fair where learners have the opportunity to place their research projects on show. It aims to develop an interest in science and research in primary and high school learners. At Expo, learners can discuss their work with judges, teachers and learners from other schools and also with other interested persons. Academics and researchers from Stellenbosch University, teachers and representatives from the industry served as judges at the Stellenbosch competition. Entries were received from 44 schools. Local schools such as Bridge House, Paulus Joubert Secondary, New Orleans Secondary, Boland Landbou, Ebenezer Primary, Ihlumelo Junior Secondary School and Dalubuhle Primary (Franschhoek) represented the Drakenstein area. In the recycling category, Robert Moerman of Bridge House won a gold medal for his entry “Waste not want not”. Bridge House learner Christopher Johnson’s invention of a depth laser for use in drilling received a bronze medal in the technology category. Naajidah Lagardien, a Grade 10 learner of Paulus Joubert Secondary, received a bronze medal for her study of diabetes. She took part in the medical sciences category. The special prize for the most innovative use of a computer went to Vaughan Johnson, a Grade 9 learner of Bridge House. The prize was sponsored by the international computer organisation “Nerds on Site”. He took part in the computer science category.
