SHIRAZ dominated the 12th annual Michelangelo International Wine Awards with sweet wines and Sauvignon Blanc also impressing the judging panel at this widely regarded and authoritive wine competition.

The results were announced at a glittering gala event at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West on 13 September.

Unlike other South African wine competitions, the Michelangelo International Wine Awards is judged by a panel consisting of international judges plus only one local judge. Eight trophies were awarded.

Raka Biography Shiraz 2007 won the trophy for the wine with the highest score in the competition. This exceptional wine was described by the judges as “a world class Shiraz” and “a prime example of winemaking excellence”.

The runner-up was Diemersdal Eight Rows Sauvignon Blanc 2008 described by the judges as “well-made with an abundance of fresh herbaceous flavours – a benchmark Sauvignon Blanc, with complexity and finesse”.

La Motte Pierneef Sauvignon Blanc 2008 won the organic trophy for the second consecutive year.

Marianne Wine Estate 2005 Pinotage won the trophy for the best Pinotage while Hofstraat Kelder won the garagiste trophy for the 2007 Renosterbos Shiraz. KWV 15 Year Old Brandy won the trophy for best brandy.

Nuy Winery Red Muscadel 1987 won the golden oldie award.

Blaauwklippen Vineyards BVS Malbec Noble Late Harvest 2007 won the trophy for most innovative wine on show.

Local double gold medal winners were Groenendal Andreas 2006, KWV 15 Year Old Brandy, KWV 20 Year Old Brandy, Landskroon Paul de Villiers Shiraz 2006, Nederburg Noble Late Harvest 2007, Nederburg Eminence 2007, Nederburg Winemaster’s Reserve Chenin Blanc 2007, Nederburg Private Bin D234 Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Seidelberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, Wellington Chenin Blanc 2008, Windmeul Vintage Port 2005, Windmeul Pinotage Reserve 2007, and Windmeul Chenin Blanc 2008.
