Record-breaking fundraiser for Paarl Rotary
2008-09-18
PAARL Rotary’s wine, art and jewellery auction has become one of the highlights on the Winelands social calender. This year’s auction under the gavel of Mark Philp amassed a record-breaking profit of about R250 000 in aid of charity. Apart from being a fundraiser, it is also an occasion for great fellowship, fun and enjoyment. Guests are treated to delectable food and fine wine to the background of lovely, live music. Thanks largely to funds generated annually by the auction, Paarl Rotary Club has, at a cost of approximately R3 million, successfully completed the single most ambitious project so far undertaken by the Club namely, the Island of Hope Crisis Centre, intended mainly for women and children who are victims of abuse. The centre has been up and running for almost two years and addresses a great need in the community. In keeping with Rotary International`s theme for the year, “Make Dreams Real”, Paarl Rotary intends making a telling contribution to improving the lives of needy children. A number of community projects, focusing mainly on children, will benefit from the proceeds of the auction. They include NorSa, a community and day care centre in Mbekweni, Amado (an animal-assisted therapy centre in Paarl for physically and mentally challenged children), and Drugwise (a program aimed at teaching the youth important life and leadership skills). Rotary thanked all the sponsors and supporters who made the day possible. Anyone who wants to know more about Rotary Community Service Projects can contact Paarl Rotary president Gerald Truter on 021-862-3192 or 082-559-8746.
