THE builders at Project 2 housing sche- me of the Drakenstein Municipality in Mbekweni are six months behind schedule with the completion of houses.

Mellon Housing and Palm Builders are the two companies responsible for the building of 746 houses at Project 2 which was stalled for ten years until earlier this year.

Mellon Housing have completed 79 of the 636 houses they are to construct, since March.

“The rest of the houses, 557 units, shoud be finished by December this year,” said Cupido Jacobs, head of housing projects at the Municipality.

Foundations for 512 houses have been laid, 181 are under construction, while 33 will be handed over to beneficiaries in the next two weeks.

“Mellon Housing is 25 weeks behind the programme due to bad weather,” said Jacobs.

Palm Builders, who are responsible for 106 houses, have handed over only ten houses of which the foundations were already laid seven years ago.

“Construction here is also very slow due to bad weather conditions,” Jacobs said.
