Composting plant approved

APPROVAL for a composting facility on the farm Groenfontein, near the existing facility at Klamputs, has been given by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.
According to the applicant, Biocircle Holdings, the raw materials will include wood chips, sawdust, winery waste, manure, chipped green garden waste and dewatered sludge.
The applicant must submit a site operation and monitoring plan to the department of Water Affairs to enbsure daily monitoring of the mechanical processes and windrows to prevent anaerobic conditions from developings and to address possible nuisances such as flies and to ensure safe disposal of residual wastes.
Contaminated water (leacheate) froem the windrow areas must be diverted via drains to the contaminated water pond.
The dam must be lined with suitable clay and the emitted air used in the drying process must be monitored for odours and micro-organisms.
Trucks will access the property from divisional road 1104 off the Old Paarl Road.
Appeals, if any, must reach the Minister of Environmental Affairs, Private Box x9086, Cape Town 8000 (fax 483-6081) by 10 August.
* The minister has also granted approval for the conversion of the La Cotte farm homestead to be converted to a 14 room guesthouse and restaurant, with an additional 11 residential units around the werf. Appeals close 10 August.
