Shoot-out decides classic clash

SCHOOLS SOCCER doesn't come tougher than the one held at Mbekweni Stadium last Friday when Desmond Tutu Secondary came head to head with rivals, Kayamandi.

Despite being vulnerable at the back, the home team from Mbekweni enjoyed a good first half in scoring three well-worked goals through Zola May (two goals) and Siyabulela Mbenege.

Kayamandi, however, quickly proved that they were not a team to be walked over as they made their presence felt with a well deserved goal to make the half-time score 1-3 in favour of the host team.

In an attempt to strengthen their defence, Desmond Tutu shuffled their backs around in order to neutralise their visitors’ dangerous forwards. This tactic, however, did not help much when Desmond Tutu’s anchor in the mid-field, Totoyi Vuyani, got red-carded when he retaliated after he was tackled.

The loss of their star player was a blow, as the side from Mbekweni did not have enough power in the mid-field, which also weakened an already struggling defence. This led to Kayamandi scoring two more goals to draw level on 3-3.

With the match already being as tough as they come, the ecstatic spectators had to hold their breath a bit longer as the two sides had to settle things with a penalty shoot-out.

Unfortunately for Desmond Tutu they lost the thrilling shoot-out by fourteen goals to fifteen.

In the other encounters on the day, Desmond Tutu proved to be too strong for their opponents with the girls’ open team winning 2-0, and the u.18 boys’ team winning 2-1.
