Artists celebrate colour
2008-09-25
ART lovers can look forward to a celebration of the miracle of colour at this year’s Cultivaria arts festival in Paarl from Friday to Sunday. The De Kat FNB Private Clients art exhibition is a visual tribute to Imagination, Colour and Direction in an impressive collection of works by top local and international artists as well as emerging young talent. According to art curator Sihan Wiid, this year’s contributing artists “are the culmination of the concept behind Celebration of Imagination, Colour and Direction. “It is the all-encompassing blank canvas that exudes, captivates and ultimately captures the essence of this year’s theme. “The notion of colour or light has fascinated artists for centuries and this exhibition can be seen as the artist’s search for expression of the virtual intangibility of this phenomenon,” explains Wiid. Festival artist Theo Paul Vorster is a contemporary modern artist who has achieved international acclaim for his accurate, illustrative works portraying the ordinary with a sometimes selfdeprecating, humorous interpretation. Vorster has created a masterpiece called Four Seasons as an apt reflection of the theme. Portrayed as a moving vehicle with female figures personifying the seasons, this work in litho also addresses serious environmental issues such as global warming, the vulnerability of our environment and the impact of human intervention. Schooled in Paarl, Vorster studied graphic design and specialised in print art. “I enjoy the three dimensional feel that you can achieve with this material. I first conceptualise the artwork before transferring it onto linoleum and then cutting it. “The cutting and line drawing is challenging, but fun. Except for the original work, I also create a limited edition of prints that ensures that my art is accessible to the average buyer,” mentions Vorster. The original Four Seasons work is done in oils and will be auctioned during the Bovril Black Tie dinner to boost the Cultivaria bursary fund. The scholarship bursary will be awarded for the first time this year to a student from the Drakenstein region for a post-matric education in the hospitality, tourism or wine sectors. A print of the piece as well as two more works specifically created for the Cultivaria exhibition will form part of the collective exhibition, which opens at the KWV Cathedral Cellar on Saturday at 11:00. Featured artists include festival artist Theo Paul Vorster, Jeffrey Appollis, Titia Ballot, Wayne Barker, John Bauer, Paul Birchall, Johannes du Plessis, Karen Cronjé, Wilma Cruise, Marna Fauree, Rodney Gee, Elsa Hagelskamp, Leah Hawker, Marlise Keith, Estelle Kenyon, Thembinkosi Kohli, Theo Kleynhans, Marieke Kruger, Susan KrugerGrundlingh, Adam Letch and Jackie Sinclair as well as Marius Lourens, Diane Maclean, Maja Maljevic, Mary-Ann Orr, Postcard Show 3 by Wendy Roux, Selwyn Pekeur, Karin Preller, Nanette Ranger, Jan Schutte, Lionel Smit, Raag Strydom, Julia Teale, Shany van den Berg, Strijdom van der Merwe, Riaan Vosloo, David Walters, Sarah Walters and Judy Woodborne. A live installation of Ten Green Bottles choreographed by artist Mary-Ann Orr and soundscaped by cello master Francois le Roux will form part of the opening, which is open to members of the public. Further installations will be done at 14:30 on Saturday as well as Sunday at 11:00 and 14:30. Her story-teller’s chair Noah’s Ark will be auctioned by Paul Myson. Further inspirational exhibitions will be showcased at De Kraal and Juno Galleries along Main Street and a selection of emerging artists will be on show at the La Rochelle High library hall. La Rochelle will feature the works of emerging artists, digital and jewellery designers as well as photographers. Multi-media sculptures of the twenty finalists in the “Pollie ons gaan Perel toe” talent search will be displayed at Die Burger Emporium on the sportsgrounds for the duration of the festival.
