Aussie honours for local winery
2008-09-25
Nederburg’s winning streak continues with cellarmaster Razvan Macici and his team taking South Africa’s only gold medal on the 2008 International Sweet Wine Challenge in Australia, the same week as earning the biggest cache of Grand d’Or medals on the Michelangelo International Wine Awards. Earlier this year, the winery was judged the most successful producer on the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show and also won the Lexus Wine Shiraz Challenge. The new Australian gold medal, one of only ten awarded worldwide, went to the 2007 vintage of Nederburg’s Noble Late Harvest, which also earned a Michelangelo Grand d’Or, demonstrating a consistent ability to perform, irrespective of the platform, according to global marketing manager Rudolph du Toit. “Nederburg’s achievement on the sweet wine competition, based in the Riverina region, which is the home of Australia’s noble late harvest wines, represents a major coup. “To our knowledge, this is the first time a local wine has earned gold on this event. Ours was the only non-Australian gold medallist and was ranked alongside some of the leading names in noble late harvest wines, including Lillypilly Estate and De Bortoli Wines.”
