Windmeul shines
2008-09-25
THE winemakers have made their selection for the winners of the Investec Private Bank Winemakers’ Choice Diamond Awards. Windmeul, outside Paarl, was awarded the red wine trophy for their Pinotage Reserve 2007, and Kleine Zalze won the white wine trophy for their Cellar Selection Select Cuvée Chenin Blanc 2007. Both Francois van Niekerk (Windmeul) and Johan Joubert (Kleine Zalze) received Winemaker of the Year Awards. This is a first for the wine industry – similar in stature to a Michelin star awarded to chefs. Windmeul this year also won the award for Champion Paarl Young Wine with their 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. Local wines which received medals were Glenwood Chardonnay Vigneron Selection 2007, Franschhoek Pass Winery Morena Methode Cap Classique 2006, Môreson Pinotage 2007, Backsberg Klein Babylonstoren Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2004 and Bellingham St George 2005 (a red blend).
