Generous bidding at auction

Generous bidding at auction

2008-09-25

NOT even the worst global financial crisis in recent history could dampen the generosity of bidders in the charity auction held at Nederburg in Paarl last Saturday, when just under R230 000 was raised for the Nederburg Charity Trust.

The single biggest price paid was R50 000 for a 50-litre barrel of 2007 Nederburg Ingenuity Red, the winery’s flagship blend of Italian varietals (Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Barbera). This is the equivalent of R750 per bottle for a wine that is still in maturation and will only be released some time in the future.

The barrel, donated by Nederburg’s cellarmaster Razvan Macici, was purchased by Ray Edwards on behalf of the Spar Group.

The sale of 50 12-bottle cases of another red blend from Nederburg, the 2003 Amateur, yielded R86 700. The recipe for the blend, also donated by Macici, was devised several years ago by a group of ten journalists in aid of charity.

Amongst the buyers of the wine, sold in various case lots, were Douw and Tilda Krugman of the Cape Town Fish Market and Adilson Carvalhal of Casa Flora, as well as Jagdish Shah of CA Sales, a buyer from Botswana.

Shah spent over R20 000 on the charity auction for a selection of lots that included wines donated by Groot Constantia, which has been a participant on every Nederburg Auction since the annual event’s inception in 1975, as well as by Kanonkop and Kleine Zalze.

A buyer from Dublin, Barry Geogheg, paid R9 000 for a 174-year-old bottle of Madeiran wine, a Malvasia Barbeito, donated by auctioneer Stephan Welz.

Ed Zeeman of the Morukuru Lodge in the North West province, purchased three lots to the value of R12 500 that included a 1963 Vintage Alto Douro Port, from the estate of the late Joe Kraatz, a regular bidder on the Nederburg Auction. In his will he left instructions to donate a special wine from his collection in aid of charity.

Brown’s Restaurant in Rivonia paid R7 000 for a unique 750ml potstill brandy, a blend created by internationally celebrated brandymaster Johan Venter, from brandies all older than 30 years. Only one bottle was blended for the auction.

The Spar Group paid R5 000 for the opportunity to blend a brandy with Venter. The brandy and the blending experience were donated by Dr Caroline Snyman of Distell.

Braam van Velden of Overgaauw, another participant on every one of Nederburg’s 34 auctions, paid R5 000 for a 50-year-old bottle of Rothenberg Riesling from Germany, donated by this year’s guest speaker, Dr Monika Christmann.

The R227 6000 raised will be shared equally amongst the three beneficiaries of the Nederburg Charity Trust. They are the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa, Organ Donor Foundation and an AIDS/HIV support NGO, Mothers2Mothers.
