2008-09-25
WITH an exclusive list of clients from as far away as Washington DC, New York, Switzerland, the Netherlands and China, designer Ali Adam recently decided to make a move to the country and make Paarl his home. Ali Adam Couture, now in Dwars-in-die-Weg Centre in midtown Paarl, opened its doors a few weeks ago. Ali plans to establish a well-trained team in Paarl and make this town the base from where he can produce his “Fusion” fashion designs, combining trends from all over the world. Currently he also has a studio in Cape Town. “I decided to open in Paarl after I met with Paarl’s mayor Charmaine Manuel at a function. She suggested that I open shop in Paarl. At that stage I was not even familiar with Paarl,” he says. He grew up in Ghana in West Africa and studied fashion design in Copenhagen, Denmark. After his studies he worked in Paris and Milan. “But my work took me all over Europe. “In 2000 I designed for the Miss Universe 2000 pageant and in 2005 for the Miss SA and Miss Teen SA pageant.” Other accolades include the show Mix Milano, held in Italy in 2006 and his ready-to- wear collection, Limelight, produced for the Pan-African show during the 2006 Nokia Cape Town Fashion Week. His designs have also featured in well-known fashion magazines like Cosmopolitan and Elle. Later this year Ali will be the solo designer at a glamour show at Boschenmeer for the TV programme Top Billing . He is hard at work on the sixty designs that will be on show.
