Take charge of your breast health

VISIT a radiological practice near you and get a 10% discount on a mammogram during October (Breast Health Awareness Month) and the first half of November. A mammogram is still the most practical and cost effective way to “know your breast status”. To highlight the benefits of good breast health and create awareness around the importance of early detection, the Radiological Society of South Africa (RSSA) is encouraging women at risk to have a mammogram. Breast cancer is the most common female cancer in the world. In South Africa, approximately one in every 8 women will develop breast cancer. Women aged 40 and over, especially those with a family history of breast cancer, should have an annual mammogram as well as an annual clinical breast examination by a healthcare professional, over and above their own monthly breast selfexamination. The key to survival is early detection of the cancer. Mammography remains the “gold standard” in screening for non-palpable breast cancers and is the only examination to constantly have resulted in a reduction in breast cancer mortality in the broader population
