Nederburg UK sales soar
2008-10-09
AS Nederburg has almost doubled its year-on-year sales in the notoriously tough UK market over the 12 past months to August, and it seems that the team under cellarmaster Razvan Macici is maintaining its Midas touch. The Paarl winery, which has been on a winning roll this year, came away with a gold and best- in-class medal at the 2008 International Wine & Spirit Competition in London for Nederburg’s 2005 Edelkeur, the botrytised wine sold exclusively on the annual Nederburg Auction. Other wines in the portfolio to also earn top ratings included a spread of Nederburg Auction, specialty and popular wines. The five additional best-in- class wines, all earning silver medals, were the 2007 Ingenuity White, an eight-way blend of eight varietals, which is housed in what is currently the apex of the Nederburg range; the more widely available 2007 Winemaster’s Reserve Noble Late Harvest and three Nederburg Auction wines, the 2007 Semillon Noble Late Harvest, 2005 Private Bin Cabernet Sauvignon and 2006 Private Bin Chardonnay D270. A further five silver medals were also awarded. Rudolph du Toit, global marketing manager, says, “With one gold, six top scores and ten silver medals on one of the world’s most respected shows, Nederburg continues to affirm its premier status across wine styles and tiers.” “These results play an important role in building Nederburg’s reputation abroad. While we maintain a front-ranking position in South Africa and in the South African category in Germany, we are seeing healthy growth in exciting new markets such as Brazil, Australia and New Zealand, as well as in Canada, Sweden and Finland.”
