‘Olympics’ for children

‘Olympics’ for children

2008-10-09

FORTY lucky children from the Eensaamheid farm near Paarl participated in the “Farm Olympics” that was hosted by the Anna Foundation during the school holiday.

For these farm children the fun activities were a real treat and every morning the children arrived an hour early ready for action! The children learnt about the history and role of the Olympics and they competed in teams representing different countries.

Each team created their own flag and team costume using basic supplies.

The teams competed in five sporting activities says Anna Brom, director of the Anna Foundation.

“Each sport activity was linked to one of the five Olympic rings which in turn were linked to a life value (honesty, discipline, teamwork, leadership and commitment). These life lessons were challenged through the particular activity.

“The highlight of the Olympics was definitely the slippery slide. Our facilitators had their hands full with screaming children sliding between the two water points.

“Five bottles of sunlight soap later and a very well washed lawn, the children were finally exhausted! By the end of day three each team was still flying their country flag high and fully enjoying the spirit of their own Farm Olympics,” she says.

The winning team proudly received their chocolate medals to close what was a very successful 2008 Olympics event.

“Special mention must go to the facilitators from Hoopenburg and De Meye After School Club. These teenagers used the opportunity to give back to other children and to see for themselves that administering children requires loads of energy.”
