Mayoral Cup Soccer tournament kicks off
2008-10-09
THE Drakenstein Mayoral Cup 2008 group draw took place in the Wellington Town Hall last Thursday. This year sees the third successive Mayoral Cup Soccer Tournament where the tournament organisers have ensured a bigger and better event kicking off on Saturday. Present at the festivities last week was the Executive Mayor of the Drakenstein Municipality, Mrs Charmaine Manuel, as well as Drakenstein municipal councillors, SAFA WP officials, members of the local organising committee and club representatives. This year sees the first time that a seeded format will take place, allowing for better competition, an exciting lead to final stages and a fairer tournament. There are 33 senior men’s teams, 16 ladies teams and 20 junior teams taking part this year. The 2008 budget and Genuine Connection promotions sponsor allocation allows for each of the 33 participating men’s teams to receive a full set of team playing kit, in line with the Mayoral Cup’s goal of developing the sport in the valley. The opening games take place on Saturday at the Boy Louw Sports Fields, with all teams playing their first matches on the day. The quarter finals are scheduled for 1 November, the semi finals on 8 November and the finals taking place on 22 November. Mbekweni United will be defending their title, as well as their claim to the prize money.
