Paarl Soccer Club marches on
2008-10-09
ON Friday evening, Paarl Soccer Club furthered their ambitions in the Metropolitan League of the Drakenstein LFA by beating Saints Football Club 2-0 at the Mbekweni Stadium. The match was a fast and furious affair and the referee stamped his authority on the game by handing each team a yellow card, only ten minutes into the game. The match situation was very tough in the first half, with neither team allowing the other a lot of space to be creative. Saints had the upper hand in the first half, but solid defence by Paarl’s centre back Hilton Jooste and goalkeeper Brendan Arendse, denied their opponents any goals. The first half ended with matters even. In the second half Paarl played with a lot more purpose and started to dominate proceedings. The onslaught eventually led to Igshaan Dennis scoring the first goal after a scramble in the penalty area and Dennis pouncing on the loose ball in the 70th minute, to beat Saints’ goalkeeper, Wesley Hendricks. Ten minutes later. Dennis completed his brace of goals after Anthony Chapman and Leroy Prins combined beautifully to put the right half in the clear. Brendan Arendse, Hilton Jooste and Igshaan Dennis were adjudged men of the match. * On Saturday, Paarl confounded their critics when they beat the log leaders City Killers from Mbekweni 1-0 on their home turf, in a very tight and tense encounter. Paarl, once again, had to rely on their defence in the first half to keep Killers’ defence at bay. However, Paarl had three clear cut chances in the first half, with Adean Lewis being the main culprit who could not convert the opportunities that came their way. The first half ended 0-0. The second half saw a more determined Paarl side and opportunities came thick and fast for both sides. It was central defender Keith Goodwin who made a difference to the outcome of the game when he scored a brilliant header from a corner kick. Thereafter Killers’ defence was relentless in their pursuit of an equaliser, but Paarl’s defence stood solid. Goodwin’s goal was the decider, with Paarl now having 25 points on the log.
