Ups and downs for Paarl Soccer Club

Ups and downs for Paarl Soccer Club

2008-10-16

THE Paarl Soccer Club lost a bit of momentum in the Metropolitan league fixture last Thursday, when they lost 2-1 against African Jaguars.

The match as a spectacle was fantastic to watch with both sides producing football of a high class.

Paarl took the lead in the 17th minute when they were awarded a free kick outside the 18 yard box of African Jaguars.

Charlon Kerspuy produced an outstanding left-footed direct free kick that the Jaguars goalkeeper could not stop.

The Jaguars team suffered another setback when one of their players was summarily dismissed from the field of play for striking an opponent off the ball.

However, this did not deter the Jaguars and they played with confidence and scored the equaliser just on the stroke of half-time.

During the course of the first half, Paarl had at least three opportunities to convert and were unsuccessful in their attempts.

The second half started briskly and the Jaguars were the more enthusiastic of the two sides.

The Paarl defence stood firm and kept the constant attacks at bay with good performances from Keith Goodwin and Charlon Kerspuy.

Paarl constantly threatened the Jaguars with forays from the right hand side where Igshaan Dennis dominated.

Unfortunately, Dennis had two clear chances in one-on-one situations with the goalkeeper, but was unable to convert the opportunities.

Jaguars made the most of their limited opportunities when they converted the winner in the 88th minute when Revaughn Mitchell was unable to clear a header and the Jaguars’ striker converted.

The final whistle went shortly afterwards.

Charlon Kerspuy was the Paarl Man of the Match with his brilliant free kick and solid all-round performance.

* On Saturday, Paarl kicked off their 2008 Mayoral Cup campaign in an unconvincing win against Newton Football Club at the Boy Louw fields.

Paarl won 2-1.
