Boland Pole Vault Academy launched
2008-10-23
IN preparation for the 2009 athletics season, a Boland Athletics Pole Vault Academy was launched last week. Boland Athletics has a long and rich history of delivering world class pole vaulters, said Dr Harold Adams, President of Boland Athletics. “Athletes such as Okkert Brits (South African and African record holder, World Cup and Commonwealth Champion in pole vault) and Elmarie Geeriths (SA and Africa Record Holder and SA Champion for several years) were products of Boland Athletics.” In recent years, the Boland Junior athletes won many medals at national and international level. In 2008, under the guidance of Pole Vault Academy Coach, Louis Nienaber, athletes such as Lindi Roux, Ruan van Wyk, Taahirah Cozain, Christiaan Norman, Jan-Louis Nienaber and Talita Lombard collectively won seven medals for Boland at national and international events. Said Adams, “Pole Vaulting is very expensive and is not accessible to disadvantaged communities. Boland Athletics negotiated from the SA Sports Trust R200 000 to purchase equipment to make pole vaulting more accessible to disadvantaged communities.” The Pole Vault Academy will be based at the Dal Josaphat Stadium from where development opportunities in pole vaulting will be launched. Schools and clubs in the Boland, who would like to provide their youth and junior athletes with an unforgettable experience in pole vaulting, can contact Boland Athletics on 072-347-8964.
