Paarl Soccer Club still on target

ON Friday evening, Paarl secured the top spot in their group phase of the Mayoral Cup soccer competition when they beat Mbekweni Pirates 1-0 in an enthralling match at the Boy Louw Sports Grounds. Paarl Soccer Club showed definite purpose and closed down the midfield to deny the Pirates from distributing the ball. Paarl had the better opportunities, but once again reflected a below average strike rate for the amount of opportunities that were created. Anthony Chapman stood out in the midfield and combined with Rieduaan Behardien and Keith Goodwin to completely control the centre of the field. In the second half, changes were made and this proved positive for the Paarl side. Bjorn Cavernelis slotted the only goal when Igshaan Dennis outpaced his opponent on the right and provided Cavernelis with the crucial cross. The match ended 1-0 in favour of Paarl. * On Sunday, Paarl had to fulfill their fixture in the Metropolitan league against Eleven Ideas from Mbekweni. Paarl proved a handful and Marvin Alexander scored the opening goal as early as the 4th minute when he brilliantly controlled the ball on his chest and put it away in the far corner to leave the goalkeeper stranded. Paarl continued to dominate the half and in the 21st minute, Alexander added to his tally by bending the ball from the far corner to score his second of the match. Eleven Ideas got a consolation goal late in the second half when they converted a goal mouth scramble to leave the Paarl goalkeeper unable to fend off the ball. The final score was 2-1 in favour of Paarl. The Paarl Soccer Club also hosted their annual Over-35 tournament over the weekend. The winners were Celtic Santos from Heideveld who defeated Avendale Athletico in the final by 1-0.
