THE Groot Constantia Trust, in collaboration with the World Heritage Centre of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, is organising a consultative meeting on the proposed nomination of the Cape Winelands Cultural Landscape as a World Heritage Site. The workshop will take place in Stellenbosch on 30 and 31 October.
In 2004 the South African government submitted to Unesco a proposal for the inclusion of the Cape Winelands Cultural Landscape as one of the possible future world heritage sites in South Africa.
The World Heritage committee accepted the proposal in 2005 when it met in Durban.
The keynote speaker at the workshop will be Dr Bernd von Droste zu Hülshoff, former founding director of the World Heritage Centre in Paris and also former assistant director-general of Unesco.
This workshop, the second of a series, is geared to identify potential core areas and buffer zones within the jurisdiction of the Cape Winelands District Municipality that could be considered for inclusion in the nomination.
It also aims to consult with planning and conservation authorities and stakeholders regarding the proposed nomination as a world heritage site in line with the Operational Guidelines for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention.
The workshop precedes any preparation of a formal nomination dossier for the proposed Cape Winelands Cultural Landscape.
Interested persons and organisations who wish to attend the workshop should contact Tania Weideman with a request to be invited.
