Awards for role models
2008-10-23
THE second Franschhoek Valley Youth Awards ceremony was celebrated in style at the NG Church hall on Saturday 18 October. The awards, which kicked off last year as part of the Bastille Day freedom celebrations, has evolved so much so that it has become an event on its own. The Youth Awards committee recognised eight candidates who are youth ambassadors for our valley. In the end a winner and two finalists were chosen who are expected to initiate and facilitate a development project. The winner of this year’s Youth Awards is Nolan Hoffman ,a passionate and energetic professional cyclist who needs no introduction locally. Amongst Nolan’s many medals which he does not count anymore, he has won the SA road Cycling Championship, came second at the Argus Cycle Tour in 2006 and 2008 and won various awards for other races locally and internationally. He is also involved in various cycling empowerment programmes. (Due to a cycle race he had in Durban Nolan could not attend the award ceremony, but his manager Conrad Lesch stood in for him). Finalist Amanda Vinqi, a grade 12 learner at Franschhoek High School has won various awards for her singing talent. She is a member of a Drama Group, and is an English/Xhosa interpreter to Korean kids. The second finalist, Justice Mvulo, is a former Groendal Secondary learner who has obtained various academic achievements and diplomas. He was the first Xhosa speaking learner in a predominantly Afrikaans school to achieve such success.
