BARELY three weeks after taking up a position at the South African Provincial Police Headquarters in Cape Town, Dir Mzwandile Tiyo of Paarl has been shot and wounded during a crime prevention initiative. Tiyo, who until recently was station commander in Paarl, had been promoted to head an elite crime prevention unit in Cape Town, the provincial Visible Policing Unit. On Sunday even-ing, Tiyo was part of an operation which was following up information in connection with armed robbers in Nyanga. The three police officers, including Tiyo, approached a suspicious vehicle in which there were four occupants. The men suddenly opened fire on the police contingent, killing reservist Bulelani Ndita, and shooting Tiyo in the sto- mach and both his legs. He was also struck various times in the chest, but his bullet-proof vest evidently saved his life. The shooters left the vehicle and fled on foot. An eighteen- year-old was apprehended, but the other three are still at large. Tiyo is in a serious but stable condition in a Cape Town hospital. The previous Paarl station commander was known for his visible policeing tactics, which decreas-ed the crime rate in Paarl. He has also been voted the Western Cape Station Commander of the Year two years in succession, as well as being in command when Paarl police station was voted Police Station of the Year in 2007.
