Old Boys’ hockey team tops log

AFTER securing a draw (1-1) against Brackenfell the previous week with an equaliser by striker Thaamir Moerat in the final minutes, the Paarl Boys’ High Old Boys hockey team knew they needed a win last Thursday to top the log.

Racing out to a 1-0 lead in the first quarter of the game, the Old Boys hung on to beat Durbanville Club 1-0 - thus securing top spot after three games.

The goal once again came via a solid strike from Moerat at the edge of the circle.

“We definitely came out with a lot of intensity and we really dominated the entire game,” Moerat said.

“We let ourselves down with the draw last week and knew we needed a win.”

After Moerat scored, the team from Paarl played a lot of defence in the second half to secure victory.

Captain Jean Oosthuizen (centre back) added: “We came out really strong. We were confident, and that’s how we were able to hold on to the lead.”

Thanks to Oosthuizen’s steady play and the defence’s ability to clear the ball, the Old Boys hung on to their lead until the final whistle.

Durbanville turned up its intensity in the second half, taking three short corners, but the Old Boys’ defence locked down to allow only one shot, which was wide.

For the Old Boys, Ryan Callanan (left wing) played his heart out and had the highest work rate.

Paarl Boys’ Old Boys take on Tigers Club from Tyger Valley tonight.
