THE leading American travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler, has adjudged Paarl’s Grande Roche Hotel the second best resort in Africa and the best travel experience in the South African Winelands. In the Best of the Best Top 100 ranking for 2008, Grande Roche achieved 8th position in the world and is the reader’s choice as the best hotel resort in South Africa. Jens Kozany, deputy general manager of Grande Roche Hotel, attended the 21st Conde Nast Traveler Awards’ glittering ceremony in the historic New York Public Library. The survey is conducted annually by Conde Nast Traveler amongst its 32 633 readers. This is the second time that Grande Roche has been rated highly by Conde Nast’s readers’ survey – in 2005 it came third in the line-up of the Top 10 Hotels of Africa and Middle East. Grande Roche has been on a winning streak since its opening in 1992. Not only was it the first hotel in South Africa to be awarded Hotel of the Year, but internationally it was named Worldwide Suburban Retreat in Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report (considered to be the “World Connoisseur’s guide to peaceful and unspoiled places”). It was also selected as one of the author’s favourite International Destinations. America’s Food and Wine magazine ranked it among the ten top wine country hotels of the world. Grande Roche’s Bosman’s Restaurant and wine lists boast an array of awards received over the years, the latest being the 2008 Wine Spectator’s “Best of Award of Excellence” – the only restaurant in South Africa to be honoured in this way. General manager Garnet Basson and his team at Grande Roche are justifiably proud of being South Africa’s leading hotel in the winelands. “We take pride in paying attention to the details that contribute towards providing a superlative experience for our guests – ranging from luxurious accommodation to gourmet cuisine,” said Basson. “In the process we have been trendsetters, offering unusual and personalised stayover packages that have helped to put Paarl and South Africa on the international tourist map, while upholding the finest tradition for hospitality that has always been associated with travelling to this southern-most tip of Africa.”
