Season of jazz starts this weekend

THE jazz season starts on Friday 31 October and continues until 3 April next year at La Brasserie in Franschhoek, every Friday from 17:30 until 20.30. The band, Cape Dutch Connection, plays 1920’s and 1930’s jazz in the style of Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, George Gershwin and Cole Porter, as well as Brazilian bossa novas, Frank Sinatra songs and even some Cape goema. Favourite songs are “Is you is or is you ain’t my baby”, “The way you looked tonight”, “Misty”, “Blue Berry Hill, and “Route 66”. The highlight of the evening is “Quando Quando”, when the staff of La Brasserie comes out to dance. The well-known saxophone virtuoso Willie van Zyl from the Navy Band in Simon’s Town will join the band for seven performances. They will also be joined by the popular trombone player and singer Klaus Baltin from Germany, who has been a familiar figure at the jazz evenings for many years. Bass guitarist Spencer Mdabu, who has played in many famous African jazz bands, will join the group, and when asked, will grab the mike and sing some beautiful African songs. And solo guitar player Cliffie Moses from a Cape Town dynasty of music maestros, will also feature on several evenings. Trumpeter Alex is training the Davids Sisters to act as backing vocalists, and Leslie Javan will play the strum guitar to add that special swing sound.
