THE Be Part Community Research Solutions is celebrating the successful completion of a year-long HIV research study thanks to hard work, dedication and patience by study participants, their families and staff.

Be Part extends its gratitude to the communities of Mbekweni, Paarl and Wellington for their support of the centre’s work and the fight against HIV, especially to participants who gave their time and energy to improve the health of their community.

A total of 800 women were recruited for the HIV incidence study, during which they received counselling before they took HIV tests, pregnancy tests and screenings for sexually transmitted diseases.

Participants also received risk reduction counselling to help them and their loved ones avoid infection.

Many women faced the HIV test with dread, as do many South Africans, but after receiving education and counselling, most women opted to know their status.

That brought about a positive change of heart, lifestyle and behaviour shift in many women’s lives.

The results from the study will be used to help determine HIV incidence in our community and inform the design of future research.

Data from the study is being analysed and will be shared with the community as soon as available.

Be Part is currently “quiet” as it is preparing for upcoming studies and looks forward to the continuing support from the communities it aims to serve.
