Drugs galore

DRUGS are finding their way into Drakenstein fast and furious. Police however, are sniffing out the stashes as they arrive for distribution among users in Paarl and Wellington.
Close to a million rands worth of drugs have been confiscated already this year in Drakenstein.
The latest haul was when Tiny the snifferdog pointed out a spot next to a bed in a makeshift home in Mbekweni. Police dug out two large green drums containing more than 10kg of loose dagga.
The dagga was confiscated, taken to the Paarl police station, weighed and sealed, to be destroyed after completion of the investigation.
“Even if we don’t find the owners of the drugs, at least we keep it off the streets,” detectives said.
“We are still making headway in the war on drug dealers.”
Most of the dagga in Paarl is brought by road from plantations in the Transkei and Lesotho.
It is off-loaded from the N1 in Du Toit’s Kloof and distributed to premises where it is rolled into cigarettes, parcels wrapped in newspaper, while smaller amounts are put into plastic bank bags and rolled into cigarettes.
When Mbekweni Police raided a shack at the weekend, they discovered a group of youths, incoherent after eating “space cakes” - muffins baked with dagga-laced dough.
A girl who had been reported missing her parents, was later found in the centre of Paarl East.
She remembered partaking of a feast in Mbekweni, but had no recollection of walking the six kilometres.
