2008-11-06
SIXTY ONE girls teed off at Wellington Golf Club last Monday (27 October) in the first Boland Girls Love Golf competition. The field included twenty junior players, headed by Porterville’s Leanke Vlok (playing off an eight handicap), whose gross score of 74 won her the stableford competition on 42 points. Paarl’s Carmenita March was the runner-up with 39 points. Nicole Bader came third (35 points). Paarl Golf Club was represented by fifteen new golfers, aged between 8 and 17 years, and all being coached by Ben Fouchee. These girls played an American Scramble, with Lanelle le Grange, Merrill Pillay and Michelle Jordaan being crowned the winners of the competition. Girls Love Golf hopes to introduce numbers of girls to the game, assisting them in obtaining handicaps and joining golf clubs, teaching them etiquette and course management, and most of all mentoring them and make golf fun. Regular informal six or nine hole competitions will be organised at Paarl Golf Club. Boland Ladies’ Golf has an extensive coaching programme for the girls once they have obtained handicaps.
