Paarl Soccer Club knocked out of Cup
2008-11-06
LAST Wednesday Paarl Soccer Club competed against Sea Birds from Mbekweni in the last sixteen clash in the Mayoral Cup. Both teams were in attacking mode and the intentions were made clear from the start of the match. Paarl drew first blood when Leroy Prins scored his third consecutive goal in as many matches after very good interplay between Bronwin Cornelissen and Igshaan Dennis. The half-time score remained 1-0. In the second half, Paarl further strengthened their position with constant attacks via their strikers and midfield. Dennis, on the right half, was constantly threatening, but it was Bjorn Cavernelis who sealed the match for Paarl in the 63rd minute after being put through by Marvin Alexander. Sea Birds got a consolation goal after being awarded a penalty when one of their strikers was adjudged to be fouled in the 18 yard box. Despite the slight setback, the Paarl defence was excellent, with Revaughn Mitchell, Shamir Davids, Charlon Kerspuy and Captain Hilton Jooste at the forefront. The final result remained 2-1 in favour of the visitors. Bjorn Cavernelis was named man of the match. * On Sunday, Paarl Soccer Club came up against Boland Warriors at the Boy Louw C-field in their quarter-final clash of the Mayoral Cup. Paarl made its usual aggressive start to the match, but the number of opportunities could not be converted into goals. It was Boland Warriors, who had the least opportunities, who scored the first goal of the match. Paarl could not get into their normally fluent stride and impatience saw them give away possession with reckless passing. In the second half Paarl had at least two opportunities, through Bronwin Cornelissen and Igshaan Dennis, to draw their side level, but it was once again Warriors who made use of a scant opportunity after dismal marking by the Paarl side, allowing their striker to slot the ball home from a corner-kick. Despite their best attempts Paarl could not break the deadlock and ended up losing the match 2-0. Paarl now has an opportunity to refocus their attention on the Metropolitan League with the eye on a top spot for promotion to the more lucrative SAB league. Paarl will be playing against Newton FC in a catch-up match of the first round on Friday evening. * The Paarl Soccer Club will be hosting its annual trophy presentation at the Drakenstein Primary School (Denneburg) on Saturday 29 November. Tickets are R100 a double and the keynote address will be delivered by Duncan Crowie (ex-Santos and Bafana professional) with Grant Johnson (Heart 104.9) as the MC for the evening. Tickets are available from Lindsay van der Berg (084-513-1474) and Byron Kulsen (072-766-1191).
