MY gardener, who year in and year out, rain or shine, promptly comes to work, is still waiting for his house.
With great excitement he recently thought that the big moment had arrived when keys to homes were handed out at Project 2, Mbekweni.
But that day only a handful of homes were delivered to the public.
And during this time I went on to read what a pathetic number of low-cost houses have been built in the area during the past year.
A piece of land was allocated to him years ago at Project 2 and he even recently paid R350 for a ‘key deposit’ to the municipality, or so he was told.
R350 is a lot of money for the only bread-winner of a family.
And still he has nothing to show for it.
The recent fires in Mbekweni literally lapped on the doorstep of his informal home, threatening to destroy all he owns.
His dream is to have his own garden, and he has already started to plant trees around the home which is supposed to be his.
But still, the house remains incomplete and no-one can give him any idea as to when he and his family will be able to move in.
But when the elections are close, the very people who are responsible for the construction of houses, will again make empty promises, just to fool the nation once again.
