Municipal worker's mayhem

Municipal worker's mayhem

2008-11-13

A MUNICIPAL worker caused thousands of rands of damage when he ploughed into a house in Phokeng Street, Mbekweni.

According to eye-witnesses, a municipal bakkie came screeching down the street late on Saturday night, when the driver lost control of it. There was a huge crash and the bakkie drove straight through a concrete garden wall, before hitting the house and coming to standstill inside it.

Hereafter the driver casually got out of the vehicle and kicked at the rubble, before falling asleep on the spot.

The owner of the house, Ivy Mashiqa, could not contain her anger.

She had just completed thousands of rands worth of renovations to the house, which has now been reduced to a pile of rubble.

“The Municipality must take responsibility for this,” she demanded.

A spokesperson for the Municipality said that the incident would now be investigated and a disciplinary hearing would be held against their employee, Ashley Williams.

The police are investigating a charge against Williams of driving under the influence of alcohol.

In Newton a woman was arrested on charges of drunken driving, after the vehicle that she was driving also crashed through the garden wall of a home.

In the process two people were injured in the road. Chanelle Ebrahim (26), who does not have a drivers licence, was arrested on the scene.
