Boland Rugby hopefuls set for success
2008-11-20
BOLAND RUGBY has announced the establishment of the Boland Rugby Academy, a training ground for Boland’s most promising rugby talents. Previously known as the JAG Boland Rugby Institute, the renewed Academy will stand as an empowered, independent rugby programme, training fifteen of the region’s finest sporting hopefuls. Spearheaded by the President of Boland Rugby Union, Jack Abrahams, the Boland Rugby Academy will be home to many young rugby recruits, honing their skills and capabilities with the hope of some day playing in the coveted green and gold jersey. The result of almost two years of intensive training and investment, the Academy has benefited from a holistic approach to the sport, pooling the resources of sporting charity JAG Foundation and Boland Rugby itself, and thus providing specialised physical training, tertiary education, life skills and world-class training facilities. “The Boland region is indeed a rugby hub,” comments Johannes Vlok, previously the JAG Project Manager for the Academy. “I can confidently say that players such as Ricky Januarie, Ashwin Willemse and even Springbok coach Peter de Villiers will not be the last coming from this region. “The Academy has been a phenomenal initiative and we are excited to see local management heading it up.” The JAG Boland Rugby Institute has enjoyed a host of notable successes over its training period. The majority of players from the Institute represented Boland in the under 21 rugby league and quite a number of players have recently signed contracts with established South African sides such as the Blue Bulls, the Lions and Western Province. Apart from its rugby successes, the Institute also believes in long-term education training, and this year has seen 23 boys complete their diploma in New Venture Creation whilst 23 others are completing their first year in Sports Management. “We are excited to take on the Academy project,” states Boland Rugby Union President, Jackie Abrahams. “We have had a very positive partnership with JAG and are thankful for the opportunity to have worked with them. “We can boast an impressive string of achievements under the previous structure and, with the help of JAG Foundation, have now formed an Academy which can truly represent the Boland region.” Visit www.jagfoundation.com.
