Paarl Soccer draws with Newton
2008-11-20
AFTER their disappointing exclusion from the Mayoral Cup in the quarter-final stage of the competition, Paarl Soccer Club resumed their title chase in the Metropolitan league of the Drakenstein LFA. In their clash against Newton FC recently at Mbekweni Stadium, Paarl ground out a 0-0 draw against their neighbouring rivals. The visitors were a constant threat to the Newton defence and it was Bronwin Cornelissen who had the best of the opportunities to get the visitors on the board. After some good interplay between the midfield and strikers, Cornelissen was put through and confronted with a one-on-one situation with the Newton goalkeeper. However, he fluffed the opportunity when he half kicked the ball after his boot got a big part of the turf in the process. Paarl had to seal the match in the second half after Marvin Alexander placed a perfect cross to the far post only for Bjorn Cavernelis to head the ball over the post. The match was momentarily stopped when left back Charlon Kerspuy fell badly on his back after one of the Newton players accidentally collided with him, Paarl had to play the rest of the second half with ten men after their manager had already made all three substitutions. Cavernelis once again spurned a golden opportunity to seal the game after substitute Anthony Chapman provided him with a sublime through ball from 25 meters. Central defender Keith Moses was named the Paarl Soccer Club man of the match.
