GOLFERS from the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) excelled at the SA Golf Foundation Boland Championships that was held recently.
Five of the six winners are products of the SAGDB programme.
The five-day championship, which is contested in both strokeplay and matchplay formats, was held at the Somerset West Golf Club from 4 to 8 July. The club generously made its facilities available free of charge.
In the A section strokeplay event, Paarl’s Trevor Mahoney won the title with a 54-hole score of 213, six under par.
Keenan Davids from Stellenbosch, who also came through the SAGDB ranks, finished second, three shots behind.
In the matchplay, Mahoney lost the final 3-2 to JJ Senekal, the only division winner who is not a member of the SAGDB. Davids won the third place playoff at the second extra hole.
The B section strokeplay, for players with a handicap of 10 to 18, was won by Justin Brown from Atlantis. His score of 247 was six shots better than fellow SAGDB golfer Cedric Rooi of Worcester.
In the B section matchplay, Rooi dominated the final against Gerhard Claasen, winning 7-6.
Mitchell Lekay from Worcester won the C-section strokeplay for golfers with handicaps higher than 18. Somerset West golfer Delano Taylor won the matchplay.
Tournament Director and SAGDB Boland coordinator, André Rossouw, said that the championship had been competitive but was played in an excellent spirit.
“Good competition brings the best out in people,” he said. Rossouw was also pleased that the board’s golfers had played so well. He said it showed the success of the SAGDB’s programmes that players were starting to come through and produce results.
SAGDB regional coach, Isaac Mahoney, agreed with Rossouw, saying that the performances from the board’s players had been “excellent, to say the least”.
“What we’re putting in, we’re getting out now,” Mahoney said.
