A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD boy was killed on Sunday while crossing Jan van Riebeeck Drive between Paarl and Wellington. Lithemba Mapokola and friends were crossing the busy road near Mbekweni, when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle. He sustained serious head injuries and died on the scene. The driver of the vehicle, Shellvo Booysen, told police that the boy had run in front of his car so quickly, that he was unable to stop in time. A spokesperson for the traffic authorities said that the speed limit in that area was 100km, and no-one should be crossing the road on foot. “Pedestrians should always cross at a safe crossing, such as a traffic light or a pedestrian crossing. Just 200m from the scene of this tragic accident is a safe area to cross the road.” Another young child was knocked down on Saturday, this time in Paarl Main Street. Chrizanne van Wyk (5) allegedly ran in front of an oncoming vehicle at approximately 18:15. She sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Tygerberg Hospital, where her condition is serious but stable.
