Mall back to business
2008-11-27
BUSINESS was still slow at Paarl Mall during the past week, after a fire caused devastating damage to a substation at this shopping centre almost two weeks ago. The eastern half of the Mall, from Pick n Pay to Mr Price, came to a virtual standstill due to the power outage. Larger stores such as Dischem and Pick n Pay could continue with their daily activities with their own generators, but smaller stores could barely trade on the Saturday of the fire. A rush took place to obtain temporary generators to reinstate power, but many businesses felt the crunch of financial losses during the power failure. Standard Bank obtained a mobile ATM centre which was placed outside the centre, as they could not operate within the bank at all. And while temperatures started to soar in the valley. shoppers were uncomfortable with no air-conditioning available. By late last week, most of the tenants were however up and running on temporary power supplied by power kiosks which were hired by Paarl Mall management to bypass the damaged substation, while repair work was being done. Mall management had hoped to have the power fully restored last weekend, but due to problems obtaining parts, this did not happen. But tenants were reassured that it will be business as usual by this weekend.
