Music Centre visits farmworkers
2008-11-27
ON Friday 14 November the Frank Pietersen Music Centre gave a little back to the farm Lelienfontein in Wellington, which does so much for workers’ children, by presenting a Christmas concert for the residents. In 2006 Rita Andreas of the Lelienfontein farm outside Wellington spoke to Vaughan Pietersen, principal of the Frank Pietersen Music Centre, explaining the vision of the Bosman family and of Andreas herself that all the farm children should have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. She hoped that the farm itself would one day have its own little orchestra. This project has slowly taken off and Lelienfontein farm now boasts a very active steel band, two violin groups, some percussionists and two groups of children playing the recorder. These groups are brought to the Frank Pietersen Music centre with the farm’s transport. There was great excitement at the farm when the concert took place in the big shed. The shed had been specially painted for the occasion and a special stage was built. The farm workers worked longer hours during the week so that they could take off early on Friday to attend the concert. The Lelienfontein staff and children were treated to an afternoon of great variety, starting off with the Junior Strings, then the different Lelienfontein groups, the Intermediate Strings, the Junior Brass and the Junior Windband as well as the combined Junior Youth Orchestra. All these groups are currently working on their repertoire for the Carols by Candlelight to be held at the centre in Paarl this Saturday evening from 18:30 (gates open at 16:00 for picnickers.
