TWO paddlers from the Paarl Canoe Club were part of the South African canoeing team who retained the African Championship title after three days of tough competition in Senegal.
The team of seniors, juniors and u.16 cadets won 14 of the 24 individual titles on offer, and a further 11 silver medals to comfortably hold off the challenge from Tunisia for the overall team title.
Melissa Moss of La Rochelle won the junior women’s K1 3000m, 500m and 200m. She also secured a third place in the 1000m event.
Another local, Paul Lombard, scooped the blue-ribbon men’s 500m title.
Lombard, a matric pupil from Boys’ High and considered one of the top u.21 canoeists in the country, also came third in the 3000m and fifth in the 1000m event.
South Africa has not lost the continental title since the inception of the competition in 2000.
