Franschhoek bursts out of its bubbles
2008-12-11
IT was all champagne and oysters in Franschhoek this past weekend, with the annual Investec Private Bank Cap Classique and Champagne Festival. More than 20 local Cap Classique producers boasted their fine fare, as well as a few of the real stuff from France. But at the end of the day it was evident that many of the locally produced Cap Classiques could any day stand side by side with French Champagne. This year’s Magic of Bubbles was a monumental success with approximately 3000 visitors passing through the gates over two days, surpassing the numbers of former years. Also, in terms of the charity component, the Lions succeeded in generating capital as did Kusasa (a child literacy initiative) who generated over R30 000, fuelling their effort to successfully combat illiteracy. The fact that this is the largest Cap Classique and Champagne Festival and is one of a kind in its unique capacity to merge Cap Classique & Champagne and illustrate that South African Cap Classique is well on its way to being as much of a household name and is comparable in terms of quality to its French counterpart and manufactured according to the same method. The Festival hopes to go from strength to strength in future years, given that bubbly in fact is becoming a steady daily favourite.
