Building project goes bust

DUE to a lengthy objection process, which caused a two year delay, a building project in central Paarl has gone bust.

Thirty purchasers of units in the five-storey Leilani Heights building in Malherbe Street, Paarl, are still waiting to moeve into the flats they have been waiting for so long.

The project was originally stalled for six months due to objections from the neighbours concerned about the height of the building. It was erected on the site of the demolished AGS Church.

The project was finally approved despite appeals to the Premier, but came to a halt a few months ago due to cash flow problems.

According to Maynard van der Westhuizen, developer, the company Maynardville Properties has been liquidated. The builder, a Mr Israel of Sturdy Construction in Cape Town, passed away last month. He died a few days before a scheduled heart bypass operation.

According to Van der Westhuizen, the project halted when the architect pointed out problems with the construction, which were to be rectified.

However, the builder insisted on payment before he would do the additional repairs, as the budget had been overrun.

Another hitch with the project, was the fact that a stormwater channel on the back of the property had been overlooked. This prevented construction of the garages planned as part of the project. Only shade netting will now be available on the parking area.

“We hope to purchase the building and complete the project as soon as the liquidation is complete.

“We had to cancel all the purchases of the flats, and will now put the flats in the market once again.”

The two-bedroom units were sold two years ago for prices varying from R450 000 to R520 000.
