Experienced coaches share their knowledge

THE Maties Athletics Club organised a very successful Boland Athletics Coaching Course from 3 to 6 December. More than 200 coaches and athletes from all over the Western Cape and as far as Windhoek in Namibia attended the course. Under the guidance of an experienced team of thirteen head coaches and eleven assistants, the 120 athletes and 72 coaches attending the course gained from the more than 100 years of coaching experience of the team. The athletes and coaches also received specialised lectures on exercise physiology and programming, growth and development patterns, biomechanics, nutrition in sport, training theory and principals, and drugs in sport. Some of the lecturers of the specialised topics were Mario Smith (2008 Boland Sport Council Coach of the year), dr Suzanne Ferreira (who coached Hilton Langenhoven, triple gold medallist at the 2008 Disabled Olympic Games) and prof Kathy Myburg (world renowned sports scientist). During the coaching course, all the athletes were also scientifically tested to determine their speed, explosive strength and endurance. A total of sixty coaches enrolled for the ASA Level 1 Coaching Course. The coaches who received their provincial colours were Marianne Nieuwoudt, Heini Redelinghuys, Kathleen Shuttleworth, Sherna Smith, Diane Venter, Hans von Lieres, Nico Jansen, Arno Blom, Rodney Booysen, Chris Bruwer, Derik Germishuys, and Nico Jansen.
