2008-12-18
SEE your golf heroes in action at the world’s second oldest national Open Championship, the South African Open taking place at Pearl Valley Golf Estates this week. The players tee off today (until Sunday). South Africa’s top golfers, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Rory Sabbatini and Trevor Immelman, will battle it out against defending champion James Kingston as well as Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose. They will compete for a total minimum prize fund of 1million Euro in the 98th edition of this historic championship. At the start of the tournament, 156 golfers will tee off, and by Saturday the golfers will be cut to 65. “Free entry, one of the greatest fields ever seen in the southern hemisphere, and the strongest possible South African challenge, means that we are expecting a record crowd,” says David Spencer, CEO-Golf of Leisurecorp. “Els, Goosen, Rose, Westwood, all the big guns are here and when you throw Sabbatini into the mix, who has incredibly never played in the South African Open before, you have the recipe for a thrilling four days of golf.” Admission to the South African Open will be free for anyone who pre-register for tickets at www.southafricanopen.com.
