Crime mars festivities

VARIOUS crimes marred festivities in Mbekweni during the past few weeks. On 28 December Chavunduka Funwell (33) died after being hit over the head with a pole. Funwell and another man were allegedly arguing over a R5 cellphone airtime card, when the incident took place. Lovemore Makhuba (25) was arrested in connection with the incident. Both men are of Zimbabwean origin. * On New Year’s Eve, shortly before midnight, the police were notified that an eight-year-old girl had gone missing from her home in Langabuya. A search was launched for the child. Only early the next morning was she found amongst bushes, about one kilometre from her home. She had been raped and was not able to make her way home. The child is currently recuperating at Tygerberg Hospital. No arrests have yet been made. * During the festive season, police seized dagga with a street value of approximately R3600. The police, together with the assistance of the Paarl Dog Unit, conducted a search which was specifically aimed at tracing illegal substances in Thembani Square and OR. The dagga was found between shacks in OR. No arrests were made. The station commander for Mbekweni, Supt Corrie Geldenhuys, expressed his regret concerning the incidents of crime in the area during the festive season, but also commended the community for their assistance in fighting crime over this period. He said that many arrest which were made, were directly due to the involvement of the community. Supt Geldenhuys said that he hoped that the relationship between the community and the police would continue to improve to make Mbekweni a safe and secure environment for all the residents during 2009.
