Local matrics shine
2009-01-08
ONCE again a matriculant from Paarl Boys’ High has made the top twenty in the Western Province. He is Hugo Biermann, who was placed fourth with distinctions in seven subjects. He follows in the footsteps of his father (also Hugo), minister of the Paarlberg NG Church, who was fifth in the province in the 1973 examination. Both Hugo and a classmate, Thomas Weighill, achieved 100% in mathematics. Another classmate, Glen Ward, who became a paraplegic following an accident early in 2008, also passed the final examination, a proud headmaster, Derek Swart, said this week. While the Western Cape pass rate is slightly lower at 78,6% compared to last year’s 80,6%, the number of students with A aggregates has decreased dramatically. This is ascribed to the fact that students no longer receive bonus points, as higher and standard grade no longer apply to subjects. Paarl Girls’ High was commended as one of the ten top schools for academic excellence within certain criteria, including 100% pass rate over three years, and the fact that 81 of the 86 matrics (94%) achieved a university pass. The other local schools which received 100% pass rate were Bridge House, Paarl Boys’ High, Huguenot, La Rochelle and Franschhoek High as well as Tersia Theron School (two candidates). Gymnasium and Labori had one failure each, and Boland Landbouskool had two failures. Other pass rates for local schools were Klein Nederburg 92,6%, Berg River 85,4%, Weltevrede 79,8%, New Orleans 78,9%, Kylemore High 75%, Groendal 63,5%, Charleston Hill 63,1%, Desmond Tutu High 59,6%, Wellington High 57,4%, Noorder Paarl 56,8%, Paulus Joubert 53,8%. * Bridge House matrics wrote the Indepent Examination Board (IEB) exam, and fared exceptionally well, with 94% of the 47 matrics achieving university pass. Their top student was Graham Ziervogel, who achieved nine distinctions. He was placed on the IEB’s Outstanding Achievement list of 41 students who were ranked in the top 5% nationally in six or more subjects. Hot on his heels was class- mate Debbie Grobler, also with nine distinctions, who made the Commendable Achievement list of the top 5% of IEB pupils nationally in five subjects. Third was Danie Terblanche, who achieved seven distinctions. Seven of Bridge House’s students were ranked in the top 1% of IEB candidates nationally. * See the full list of top candidates on page 11.
