Overloaded taxi kills four
2009-01-15
FOUR people died early yesterday morning when a minibus taxi rolled on the N1 near the Huguenot toll plaza. The taxi was returning from Aberdeen in the Eastern Cape and was on its way Cape Town with 21 passengers on board when the accident took place. A tyre presumably burst, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The taxi with its trailer spun out of control before rolling. The entire area was strewn with bodies, luggage and debris, and it took several hours to clear the accident scene. Another 17 passengers were injured and transported to various hospitals. A spokesperson for the provincial traffic authorities said that this accident proves that overloaded vehicles such as this are a death-trap on the roads. “If the accident had taken place during peak hour, more lives would probably have been lost. This incident will be investigated and all possible steps will be taken against the culprits.”
