A big thank you for helping my child

A big thank you for helping my child

2009-01-15

WE as parents tend to complain, condemn and ridicule teachers when things are not going well, and forget to thank them when they do good.

When my daughter failed Grade 10 she was advised to go to vocational education, it was her first failure. I refused and insisted on necessary interventions to take place.

Many educators at the school wrote negative reports, except for a few. I was in and out of the school.

My child didn’t want to go back. She was down and demoralised. I ran out of patience. My perception about the school changed.

I knew that I had to do something. I consulted all relevant role-players in the Education Department. The advice was the same - to take her out of this school.

As a parent I knew that she had the ability and the potential, but didn’t know how to optimise it.

The turning point was the arrival of two special teachers at the school - immediately, they noticed something in her. They encouraged her through her strengths and motivated her to demonstrate her full brain potential by allowing her to express herself and her talent.

These opened a special place in their hearts for her, while I as a parent lost hope and was about to give up. They taught me one good lesson - never give up until there is nothing more to try.

She began to speak positively about the school. She formed new friendships across colour and race. She started to visit and explore, and spent more time with her studies. Her school work improved.

The principal called me and assured me that one day, the two of us would be proud of her. She had no doubt that she would pass matric well.

My message to those who failed, is to use this experience as a stepping stone and a spring-board. Never stop trying.

To parents: be patient with them. Try to understand the pain that they are going through. Be supportive and avoid criticism.

To my baby; I know that at times I overreacted and said hurtful words. I am sorry for all the mistakes I have made.

To Mrs van den Heuvel and Mrs Colyn: you are examples of teachers, mothers, nurturers, guides and supporters. You showed me that you have Ubuntu.

You are the Star called Ikhwezi-Lomso. I am truly proud and grateful.Sis T (Mbekweni)
