Sher and The Tempest
2009-01-15
THE acclaimed Cape Town-born actor Sir Antony Sher will present a lunch-time masterclass entitled Shakespeare and Me on Wednesday 28 January at 13:00 in the Baxter Concert Hall. Sher will talk about his career at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), and will share some rare insights into his illustrious career. He will illustrate the talk with extracts from the plays and anecdotes from his life, and will then take questions from the audience. Tickets are R50 and all proceeds will go to the Brett Goldin Bursary. Knighted for his services for acting and writing, and an RSC Associate Artist, Sher first worked for the company in 1982. His many roles have included his award-winning performance in Richard III as well as the title roles in Tamburlaine, Cyrano de Bergerac and Macbeth. He played Shylock in The Merchant of Venice and Iago in Othello. He last performed at the Baxter Theatre Centre in January 2005, when his one-man show, Primo, sold out before it opened, and for which he won the Fleur du Cap best solo performance award. Sher is in the Mother City to play Prospero opposite John Kani as Caliban in a new production of William Shakespeare’s magical last play, The Tempest, at the Baxter Theatre from January 17 to February 6. Janice Honeyman directs the multiple-award-winning actors Sher and Kani, two theatre blue-bloods who will be sharing the stage for the first time. The formidable line-up includes all three Brett Goldin Bursary recipients, Omphile Molusi (2007) and joint 2008 winners Thami Mbongo and Nicholas Pauling. The rest of the cast comprises Ivan Abrahams, Jeremy Crutchley, Nkosinathi Gaar, Alex Halligey, Atandwa Kani, Charlie Keegan, Elton Landrew, Lionel Newton, Chuma Sopotela, Royston Stoffels, Wayne van Rooyen and Tinarie van Wyk Loots, with musicians Anjulie Nock, Lungiswa Plaatjie and Andre Swartz to complement the ensemble. Illka Louw is responsible for design; musical direction, composition and sound design are by Neo Muyanga; Janni Younge is the puppet maker; and Mannie Manim joins the creative team as lighting designer. Choreography is by Christopher Kindo, the RSC’s Lyn Darnley is the voice coach and Luke Ellenbogen is the assistant director. A special performance of The Tempest on Monday 19 January at 8 pm will be dedicated to the memory of slain actor Brett Goldin. The Shakespeare and Me masterclass by Sir Antony Sher on Wednesday, January 28, at 13:00 in the Baxter Concert Hall is R50, while the ticket prices for the Brett Goldin Bursary fundraiser of The Tempest on Monday, January 19, at 20:00 are between R80 and R100.
