Old Boys are gearing up for big season

2009-01-15

THE Boys’ High Old Boys hockey team is gearing up for a killer season after being drafted directly into the Western Province Summer League MA division.

The unbeaten success of last year, their first season, meant that the Old Boys will match their skills against seven of the top sides in the Western Cape.

The only teams not represented in the top summer league are the two universities, Maties and UCT.

The Old Boys need to perform this season as it will determine whether they get accepted into the Western Province Hockey Association when the winter astro season starts.

Old Boys’ team captain, Jean Oosthuizen, said: “If we have a losing run it will make it difficult for us to claim a spot in one of the top leagues. We would have to be content with playing our hockey in the Summer league.”

Thaamir Moerat, last season’s top goal scorer added: “It’s going to be tough, but if you want to be the best, you must compete against the best.

“I am especially looking forward to the Pinelands and Central games as they have a couple of Western Province players in their set-up,” Moerat said.

The Old Boys will play Hartleyvale A on 22 Jan (20:30) at Fish Hoek, WPCC on 26 Jan (19:30) at WPCC A1, Vygieskraal on 5 Feb (18:30) at Central HC, Hartleyvale A on 11 Feb (19:30) at Cape Town Raiders, Hartleyvale A on 16 Feb (20:30) in Durbanville, WPCC on 23 Feb (18:30) at WPCC A2, Hartleyvale A on 3 March (19:30) at Pinelands.

Any new players can contact Moerat or Oosthuizen on 083-308-2015 and 082-909-1068.
