Hot from the foundry

PAARL might be warm in summer, but not nearly as hot as the latest addition to the collection of art studios that enrich the Valley.
Bronze Age studio opened its doors on Seidelberg Wine Estate, only meters from the Red Hot glass blowing workshop and gallery. Charles Haupt, a designer from the Bronze Age Art Foundry in Simon’s Town, moved to the Winelands to open the studio in a homestead in Suid Agter-Paarl.
The studio showcases some of South Africa’s finest designers to art lovers who seek a combination of individual style and practicality.
Specialising in the enhancement of sculptural design and functional art, metal is molted at 120degrees celcius and cast into a sand mould.
A choice of silicon bronze, nickel bronze or silver casting offers a range of finishes on items from lighting and door knobs to cutlery, bowls and paper weights, tables and chairs.
Guests at the recent roofwetting, were treated to a demonstration under muted lights. With only the searing heat and the bright glow of the foundry to outline the fettler, onlookers stared in amazement as the molten metal changed shape and was transformed into the latest piece of art to adorn the studio.
